The first episode of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ quite literally straddles the Dexter timeline and officially sets the stage for the future of the series (What a time to be alive). We are introduced to the fresh
new cast who will serve as the caretakers of these beloved characters for the duration of the prequel while also solidifying the narrative framing which will eventually lead us into ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ which is now expected to premiere next Summer. Considering this is the pilot episode of a prequel series that chronicles the misadventures of a young Dexter Morgan, I suspect it will also be the episode that treads the most familiar ground for established fans.
As a pilot, it needed to accomplish a lot in just one hour: Sell established fans on the new cast, introduce new fans to the character, stay true to the story which was first told back in 2006, and justify its own existence by hinting at untold truths that were never revealed in the original series. On top of that, it needed to establish an important link to the end of ‘Dexter: New Blood’ to keep some of the fandom on the hook for the duration. The result is an impressive episode that feels nostalgic and fresh, but maybe a little rushed.
